The ECBA is partner of the project Qualetra, an EC funded project (JUST/2011/JPEN/AG/2975, Criminal Justice Programme | European Commission Directorate General Justice) coordinated by Thomas More / University of Leuven, Faculty of Arts - Language and Communication, Antwerp. The main goal of the project is to improve translation in criminal proceedings.

Priority will be given to practical results which can be directly used by practitioners and policy makers in their respective Member States. The project will focus on actions to develop curricula, assessment procedures and certification and accreditation strategies in order to improve the training of legal translators. In addition the project will develop models for legal practitioners to interact efficiently with legal translation.

Vania Costa Ramos of the ECBA met Mr. James Brannan from the Registry of the ECtHR at the TRAFUT conference in Madrid.

Mr Brannan made a presentation on the Case-Law of the ECtHR on the right to interpretation and translation and provided summaries of the Case-Law of the ECtHR on that subject. The list was very useful and Mr. Brannan has kindly agreed that we can publish a similar list on the ECBA website and distribute it to our members.
